Mat Latos tossed seven shutout innings as the San Diego Padres edged the slumping Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 Tuesday night.

Latos (8-4) scattered three hits while walking one and striking out eight. The sensational outing gave him five victories in his last six starts while lowering his ERA to a season-best 2.93.

Chase Headley had an RBI fielder's choice and Will Venable drove in the deciding run when he was hit by a pitch in San Diego's two-run third inning.

The Rays got to San Diego reliever Mike Adams in the eighth inning after doing nothing against Latos, trimming the lead in half on an RBI single by John Jaso. Heath Bell came on for the Padres and recorded the final four outs for his 18th save.

Wade Davis (5-8) lost his fourth decision in a row, surrendering two runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings. He walked five and struck out one.

American League player of the week Carl Crawford had two hits for Tampa Bay, which has dropped three straight games and eight of 11.
