Yadier Molina delivered the go-ahead hit for the second straight game and the host St. Louis Cardinals extended the Atlanta Braves’ losing streak to seven games with a 5-4 victory on Tuesday night.
St. Louis trailed 2-1 before scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Ludwick tied the score with a double and Molina delivered a two-run single later in the inning. The fourth run scored on David Freese’s RBI single.
The Braves scored twice in the seventh, one on a throwing error by St. Louis pitcher Blake Hawksworth and the other on Chipper Jones’ single. Atlanta had the bases loaded with two outs before reliever Trever Miller struck out Jason Heyward.
Jason Motte pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for his first save of the season and second of his career.
Chris Carpenter (3-0) allowed just two runs and three hits in six innings.
Atlanta’s losing streak is the team’s longest since a 10-game skid in June 2006.
The Braves took a 2-0 lead in the second on run-scoring singles by Melky Cabrera and Derek Lowe. The Cardinals pulled within 2-1 in the fourth on Ludwick’s fourth homer of the season.
Lowe (3-2) gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings.
