Jerry Hairston Jr. had three RBIs and Clayton Richard pitched six solid innings as the San Diego Padres defeated the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers 6-1 on Wednesday night.
Hairston had a run-scoring double in the seventh and a two-run single in the eighth for the Padres, who didn’t score in the first 14 innings of the series until scoring six times over their final three at-bats on Wednesday.
Richard (8-5) had his best outing of the month by allowing just one run and four hits in six innings. He struck out six and walked one.
San Diego pitchers retired the final 19 Los Angeles hitters. Four relievers combined for three hitless innings as the Padres beat the Dodgers at Petco Park for the first time in five meetings this season.
The Padres broke through in the sixth when Adrian Gonzalez singled in Tony Gwynn Jr., and Nick Hundley hit a sacrifice fly to give San Diego a 2-1 lead.
Hairston doubled in younger brother Scott Hairston in the seventh and then scored on Chris Denorfia’s single.
Los Angeles scored in the third inning when Jamey Carroll singled home Blake DeWitt.
Hiroki Kuroda (8-9) gave up three runs and four hits in six-plus innings. Kuroda struck out five and walked two.
