Blake Beavan allowed one run and three hits in seven innings in his major league debut to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 3-1 victory over the visiting San Diego Padres on Sunday.
The 6-foot-7 Beavan struck out four and walked two as Seattle defeated San Diego for the fifth time in six meetings. Beavan was part of the package the Mariners received from Texas in last summer’s trade of Cliff Lee.
David Pauley worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and All-Star Brandon League struck out two in the ninth for his 22nd save.
Ichiro Suzuki scored twice and reached base three times on two hits and a walk after going hitless in the first two games of the series.
Ichiro led off the game with a single, stole second and scored on Adam Kennedy’s single to left off Mat Latos (5-9).
San Diego tied the game in the third when Alberto Gonzalez singled and scored on Will Venable’s double.
Seattle tallied twice in the third on back-to-back sacrifice flies by Justin Smoak and Dustin Ackley.
Latos allowed three runs and four hits in six innings. He struck out five and walked three.
