Yankees 3, Dodgers 0: Pinch hitter Lyle Overbay delivered a go-ahead RBI single with two outs in the top of the ninth as visiting New York earned a split of the two-game series.

Overbay lined a single to center off reliever Paco Rodriguez to snap a scoreless deadlock one batter before second baseman Mark Ellis dropped a two-out pop fly off the bat of Jayson Nix, allowing two more runs to score and snapping Los Angeles' four-game win streak.

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, who was honored in pregame ceremonies, pitched a perfect ninth for his 34th save and Boone Logan (3-2) worked a scoreless eighth as New York improved to 5-7 since the All-Star break. Hiroki Kuroda was superb for the Yankees, striking out eight and giving up five hits over seven scoreless innings - the fourth time in his last five outings he has not allowed a run.

The Dodgers wasted a stellar performance from left-hander Clayton Kershaw, who blanked New York on five hits over eight scoreless frames to lower his ERA to a major league-best 1.87. Andre Ethier and A.J. Ellis each had two hits but Hanley Ramirez had his 11-game hitting streak halted for Los Angeles, which lost for only the seventh time in 34 games and had its lead atop the National League West cut to 2 1/2 games over Arizona.

Yankees captain Derek Jeter started the winning rally by drawing a leadoff walk off Ronald Belisario (4-6). Robinson Cano grounded into a fielder's choice, moved to second on a grounder and scored on Overbay's single after Ichiro Suzuki was intentionally walked. Dodgers manager was ejected after arguing a checked swing call on Overbay.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez is scheduled to participate in a simulated game on Thursday and begin a rehab assignment Friday, although USA Today reported Wednesday that Major League Baseball is prepared to hit him with a lifetime ban for his involvement in the Bigonesis clinic scandal. ESPN reported that Rodriguez's representatives were huddling with MLB officials in an attempt to negotiate a settlement. ... The Dodgers recalled OF Scott Van Slyke from Triple-A Albuquerque and acquired minor-league catcher Sal Butera from the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday. Butera was optioned to Albuquerque. ... Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said OF Curtis Granderson will be activated off the disabled list Friday in San Diego.
