Brewers 10, Pirates 4: Jean Segura sparked a five-run first inning with a two-run blast as host Milwaukee continued its recent domination of Pittsburgh.
Yovani Gallardo (3-1) homered for the second time this season and retired the final 13 batters he faced before departing after seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits. Carlos Gomez, Yuniesky Betancourt and Norichika Aoki also went deep for the Brewers, who have won eight straight over the Pirates.
After getting shut out Sunday by the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw, Milwaukee jumped all over Wandy Rodriguez (2-1). The left-hander surrendered seven runs and six hits, allowing three more earned runs over 3 2/3 innings Monday than he had over his first four starts combined.
Andrew McCutchen drove in the first run with an RBI groundout, but the Pirates’ lead quickly dissolved after Segura followed Aoki’s leadoff walk with his second homer. Rodriguez walked three more batters in the inning, allowing Betancourt (groundout) and Martin Maldonado (two-run single) to cap the five-run frame.
Gaby Sanchez trimmed Pittsburgh’s deficit to 5-2 with an RBI double, but Gallardo and Aoki blew the game open with back-to-back solo shots in the fourth. Jonathan Sanchez relieved Rodriguez two batters later, but yielded consecutive home runs to Gomez and Betancourt as the Brewers built a 9-2 lead in the fifth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Milwaukee registered three triples in addition to its five homers, becoming the first team since 1958 to achieve both marks in the same game. … Gallardo won his seventh straight decision against the Pirates and improved to 10-2 in 16 appearances – including 15 starts – against them. … Gomez, who entered Monday 9-for-19 in his last five games with three doubles and a home run, went 2-for-3 with a triple and scored three times.
