Marlins 8, Padres 2: Giancarlo Stanton blasted a two-run homer and Tom Koehler tossed six strong innings as Miami won the series opener against visiting San Diego.
Adeiny Hechavarria went 4-for-5 and Jarrod Saltalamacchia added three hits while Koehler (1-0) allowed two runs on seven hits for Miami, which has totaled 35 runs with 19 extra-base hits through five games after ranking last in the majors in batting average and runs scored last season. Brad Hand worked the final three innings for his first career save to help the Marlins improve to 4-1.
San Diego starter Eric Stults (0-1) lasted four innings and allowed five runs on seven hits, including Stanton’s two-run shot in the first inning that was measured as the longest in Marlins Park history at 484 feet. Jedd Gyorko broke a 0-for-10 skid with two hits, including a run-scoring single during the Padres’ two-run sixth.
The Marlins extended their lead to 5-0 in the third on Casey McGehee’s sacrifice fly and Saltalamacchia’s two-out, two-run double into the gap in left-center. Donn Roach took over for Stults in the fifth and allowed two more runs, including Garrett Jones’ RBI double, before the Padres got on the board in the sixth with consecutive run-scoring hits from Yonder Alonso and Gyorko.
Yasmani Grandal and Gyorko had two hits apiece for San Diego, which has scored a total of eight runs during its 1-3 start. The Padres loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but Koehler retired pinch-hitter Tommy Medica and Everth Cabrera to escape the jam.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Stanton has hit safely in eight of his last nine games against the Padres with five home runs. … San Diego 3B Chase Headley went hitless in four at-bats and is 1-for-16 this season. … Jones contributed two hits for the Marlins, who have won four in a row against the Padres.
