Jose Iglesias smacked a game-winning single, Niko Goodrum homered and scored twice, and the Detroit Tigers edged the visiting Seattle Mariners 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park.
Seattle lost second baseman Robinson Cano for an indefinite period. The eight-time All-Star suffered a fractured fifth metacarpal on his right hand after being hit by a pitch in the third inning.
Mariners left-hander James Paxton got a no-decision in his first start since his no-hitter at Toronto on Tuesday. He gave up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts in six innings.
JaCoby Jones led off the ninth against Juan Nicasio (1-2) with an infield single. Goodrum advanced him to third with another single and Iglesias then slapped an opposite-field single against the drawn-in infield.
Goodrum finished with three hits and Mikie Mahtook added two hits and two RBIs. Shane Greene (2-2) pitched an inning of scoreless relief to earn the win.
Kyle Seager homered for Seattle, Dee Gordon added two hits and an RBI and Jean Segura chipped in a two-run hit.
Detroit's Blaine Hardy made his first major-league start after 167 relief appearances. He tossed 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits.
Third baseman Jeimer Candelario and right fielder Nicholas Castellanos were out of the Detroit lineup due to injuries.
Seager clubbed his seventh homer to lead off the second, depositing a 1-0 offering over the right field wall.
Paxton's scoreless innings streak reached 18 when he retired the first six batters. Detroit broke through with two runs in the third.
Goodrum got the first hit off him in 12 innings with a liner to center. Dixon Machado's one-out single was followed by Mahtook's RBI hit. Pete Kozma's groundout brought home the second run.
Seattle tied it at 2-all with three singles in the fourth, including Gordon's RBI hit.
Goodrum's opposite-field shot, his second this season, put the Tigers back on top 3-2 in the fifth.
The Tigers added a run in the seventh on Mahtook's two-out RBI double.
Detroit reliever Joe Jimenez dropped a throw that would have gotten him out of an eighth-inning jam. Jean Segura made him pay with a two-run single that tied it at 4 apiece.
