Mike Trout hit a three-run double in the fourth inning, sparking the Los Angeles Angels to a 6-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night in Anaheim, Calif.
Trout, who went 2-for-4 with a walk, has reached base in all 28 games he's played this season. He set a club record for reaching base in consecutive games to start the season, passing the previous mark of 27 set by Darin Erstad in 2000.
Trout leads the majors with 30 walks, but when he went to the plate in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and one out, Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman had nowhere to put him. On a 2-1 count, Trout laced a ball into the left field corner, scoring all three baserunners to increase the Angels' lead from 2-0 to 5-0.
Trout has had success in his career with the bases loaded, batting .397 (25-for-63), including a popout in the fifth inning Wednesday.
Trout's double in the fourth ended the night for Stroman (1-4), who allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings. It was his shortest outing of the season.
The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Albert Pujols, and they doubled the advantage in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk by Tommy La Stella.
After Trout made it 5-0, the Blue Jays broke through against the Angels' Felix Pena in the fifth. Reliever Luke Bard pitched a scoreless first inning before Pena took over in the second. He kept Toronto off the board until Rowdy Tellez homered leading off the fifth.
The Angels added a run in the bottom of the fifth before Randal Grichuk's two-run homer in the sixth narrowed Toronto's deficit to 6-3.
Pena (1-1) allowed three runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings to get the win. Ty Buttrey threw two scoreless innings to earn his first save.
