Jordy Mercer hit a game-winning RBI single in the ninth and the host Detroit Tigers overcame a six-homer onslaught by the New York Yankees to capture a 12-11 win on Tuesday.
Grayson Greiner hit a one-out double off Chance Adams (1-1) and Mercer followed with his single to right, knocking in pinch runner Willi Castro.
Jeimer Candelario drove in three runs for Detroit, while Christin Stewart homered and knocked in two runs. Joe Jimenez (4-7) pitched a scoreless inning to get the win as Detroit wiped out an early six-run deficit.
Brett Gardner and Didi Gregorius hit two homers apiece for New York. Edwin Encarnacion and Gleyber Torres also homered.
Gardner, the No. 2 hitter in the lineup, homered to right in the first inning for the first run of the night.
The Yankees jumped on Detroit starter Edwin Jackson for five runs in the second inning. Mike Ford drove in the first run with a single. Tyler Wade drilled a two-run triple and one out later Gardner hit his second long ball of the night to make it 6-0.
The Tigers evened the score with a six-run third. Miguel Cabrera knocked in the first run with a single. Candelario followed with an RBI single and, one out later, Stewart hit a sacrifice fly. Travis Demeritte smacked a run-scoring single before Greiner drove in two runs with another single.
Torres homered to left to put New York on top 7-6 in the fourth. Gregorius' solo shot with two out in the fifth gave the Yankees a two-run edge.
Stewart got one run back in the bottom of the inning with his homer.
Detroit took the lead at 10-8 with three runs in the sixth. Cabrera had a sacrifice fly and Candelario ripped a two-run single.
Encarnacion knotted the score again with a two-run blast in the seventh that traveled 418 feet. The next batter, Gregorius, hammered his second homer of the night off Daniel Stumpf, who came in to face Gregorius.
Harold Castro's RBI single in the bottom of the inning tied it at 11-11.
