Ray McCallum scored a game-high 21 points as Detroit downed visiting St. John’s 69-63 on Monday.
Chase Simon added 20 points for the Titans (4-6), who capped their victory on the same night they paid homage to former Detroit coach and current ESPN analyst Dick Vitale by renaming their court after him.
Assistant Mike Dunlap continued to fill in for St. John’s coach Steve Lavin, who continues his recovery from prostate cancer surgery and has vowed not to return to the sidelines until he has the stamina to do so.
The Red Storm (4-5), last in the Big East in 3-point shooting, continued their season-long struggles by going 5-of-21 behind the arc, negating their 37-25 rebounding advantage.
Trailing by one midway through the first half, Detroit took the lead for good as McCallum and Simon combined for nine points during a 14-0 run.
St. John’s made things interesting in the final minutes by hitting consecutive 3-pointers to move within five points each time, but Detroit scored on its final 11 possessions as McCallum and Simon combined to score 12 of the team’s final 16 points to hold off the Red Storm’s rally.
Moe Harkless paced the Red Storm with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
