Marquette 89, DePaul 78: Vander Blue scored 18 points and Junior Cadougan had 17 as the host Golden Eagles remained atop the Big East standings
Three others scored in double figures for Marquette (17-5, 8-2 Big East). Davante Gardner finished with 13 points, Jamil Wilson scored his 11 in the second half and Chris Otule contributed 10 points for the Golden Eagles, his first game in double digits since Nov. 21.
Brandon Young scored 21 points to lead DePaul (10-13, 1-9). Donnavan Kirk chipped in a career-high 16 points and Worrel Clahar also scored 16 for the Blue Demons, who have lost eight straight.
Cadougan scored 10 points in a closely played first half that ended with Jamee Crockett’s dunk, cutting Marquette’s largest lead of the game to 43-38.
DePaul cut the lead back to one possession four times early in the second half. A three-point play by Cadougan sparked a 7-0 run that extended the lead to nine with 13:56 left and the Blue Demons never got closer than four the rest of the way.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Young finished with six assists, giving him more than 100 in three straight seasons. The last player for DePaul to accomplish that feat was Rod Strickland from 1985-88. … DePaul junior F Cleveland Melvin, who came in averaging a team-high 16.6 points, finished with nine. … Marquette has won 22 straight home games, the fifth-longest active streak in the nation.
