Miami (Fla.) 57, Virginia Tech 53: Rion Brown scored 15 points to lead a balanced offense as the Hurricanes edged the Hokies in the first round of the ACC Tournament at Greensboro, N.C.
Erik Swoope and Davon Reed recorded 14 points apiece for No. 10 seed Miami (17-15), which will play seventh-seeded North Carolina State in Thursday’s second round. Tonye Jekiri grabbed 12 rebounds and Swoope added eight boards as the Hurricanes won for the fifth time in their last seven games.
Jarell Eddie had five 3-pointers and 16 points for 15th-seed Virginia Tech (9-22), but could not get a shot up after grabbing a rebound off a missed free throw in the final seconds with the Hokies down 55-53. Freshman Devin Wilson added nine points and five assists as Virginia Tech lost for the first time in three games to Miami this season.
Eddie made three 3-pointers to help Virginia Tech build its lead as high as nine before Reed drained four from behind the arc to pull the Hurricanes within 32-31 at intermission. Brown scored five during an 11-3 burst early in the second half as Miami took a five-point lead and pushed it to 49-42 with 9:32 left.
The Hokies battled back to tie it at 49 on Wilson’s layup before going ahead 52-51 on Eddie’s 3-pointer with 3:22 left. Swoope’s basket quickly gave Miami the lead and after several failed possessions and two missed free throws by Tech’s Joey van Zegeren with 9.5 seconds left, Brown and Swoope each made a pair of free throws to seal it.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Miami finished with a 36-24 edge on the boards. … Virginia Tech was without G Adam Smith and F C.J. Barksdale, who along with Miami C Donnavan Kirk were all held out with injuries. … The Hurricanes, who split two games with North Carolina State during the regular season, made 16-of-19 free throws and the Hokies were only 9-of-17.
