LSU 74, No. 17 West Virginia 73: Tim Quarterman scored a career-high 21 points off the bench and Josh Gray scored the winning layup with 7.4 seconds left as the visiting Tigers rallied from a 14-point deficit to stun the Mountaineers in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
Jarell Martin collected 18 points and 14 rebounds and Keith Hornsby added 15 points for LSU (6-2), which was 8-of-15 from 3-point range. Gray struggled to seven points on 3-of-7 shooting but dished out seven assists and drove up the right side of the lane for the winning bucket.
Juwan Staten scored 17 points on 6-of-19 shooting to lead West Virginia (7-1). Daxter Miles Jr. added 13 points and Tarik Phillip scored 12 off the bench as the Mountaineers shot 34.3 percent overall and were 5-of-17 from long range.
The Tigers led by as many as six points in the first half, but the Mountaineers held LSU to one field goal over the final 6:27 of the half to take a 43-38 lead into the break. West Virginia blitzed the Tigers with a quick 9-0 run over the first 1:53 of the second half to push the margin to 52-38.
The Mountaineers went cold from there as LSU steadily cut into the margin and pulled even at 56 on Hornsby's 3-pointer with 9:06 left, setting up a back-and-forth finish. West Virginia led 71-67 with 1:32 remaining before Martin's tip-in of Hornsby's miss and Hornsby's 3-pointer put the Tigers on top, and the Mountaineers regained the lead on Miles' tip-in of a missed free throw only to see Gray drive for the game-winner.
GAME NOTEBOOK: LSU F Jordan Mickey, who entered the game averaging a team-high 17.5 points, spent most of the first half on the bench in foul trouble and finished with four points on 2-of-4 shooting. … LSU committed 24 turnovers - 19 on West Virginia steals. … West Virginia lost for only the fourth time in its last 59 non-conference home games.
