No. 4 Louisville 94, Indiana 74: Chris Jones had a career-high 24 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals as the Cardinals downed the Hoosiers in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.
Terry Rozier contributed a personal-best 26 points while Montrezl Harrell logged his fourth consecutive double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds for Louisville (8-0), which has won 10 straight games at New York City’s famous arena. Wayne Blackshear added 14 points, seven boards and five assists for the Cardinals, who grabbed 26 offensive rebounds en route to 52-34 advantage on the glass.
Freshman James Blackmon Jr. poured in 18 points for Indiana (7-2), which outscored Louisville 15-4 on the break but matched a season-high with 19 turnovers. Yogi Ferrell tallied 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists while Hanner Mosquera-Perea and Troy Williams chipped in 10 points apiece for the Hoosiers.
Harrell scored 12 points – all but two coming on dunks – as Louisville forced 13 turnovers and used runs of 7-0 and 14-2 to build a 44-31 lead before Nick Zeisloft capped Indiana’s 7-of-10 first-half effort beyond the arc with a pair of 3-pointers to key a half-ending 10-2 surge. The Hoosiers, who trailed by five at intermission despite shooting 55.2 percent, scored nine straight and 11 of the first 13 points – including back-to-back buckets from Blackmon – to tie their biggest lead of the game at 52-48.
Indiana’s edge proved to be short-lived, however, as Harrell, Jones and Rozier combined for all of Louisville’s points during a 17-6 surge that answered the Hoosiers’ early spurt. Emmitt Holt temporarily halted the run with a layup with 11:13 to go, but Indiana was held without a field goal for nearly five minutes and Rozier capped an 18-8 push with a 3-pointer to put the game out of reach.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Louisville improved to 3-0 against the Big Ten this season, defeating Minnesota 81-68 in the season opener on Nov. 14 before downing Ohio State 64-55 on Dec. 2. … Indiana fell short of joining Kansas with 17 wins over ranked foes since 2011-12. … Harrell’s sixth dunk of the game with 12:48 remaining pushed him past Pervis Ellison (162) and into first place on the school’s all-time list for dunks. The junior forward finished with seven dunks on Tuesday.
