HONOLULU -- Ronnie Boyce scored 19 points and Chase Foster added 12 to help San Francisco escape with an 89-86 victory over Utah in the opening round of the Diamond Head Classic on Thursday.
The Dons (9-2) matched a tournament record with 16 3-pointers. They shot 57 percent from the perimeter overall. San Francisco advances to the semifinals to play either Illinois State or Hawaii on Friday evening.
Sederick Barefield scored a career-high 35 points and David Collette added 18 to lead the Utes. It wasn't enough to help Utah (7-3) earn its first win at the Diamond Head Classic. The Utes fell to 0-4 all-time in the tournament.
The two teams combined for 44 turnovers. The most critical one came when Utah had a chance to tie or take the lead in the final seconds. Barefield got called for an offensive foul with 4.4 seconds left and Frank Ferrari hit 1-of-2 free throws to ice the win.
Utah capitalized on 11 San Francisco turnovers to gain some early first half momentum. The Utes scored 15 points off those mistakes.
Collette also did plenty of damage early. He scored three of Utah's first four baskets and threw down a dunk to give the Utes a 29-25 lead with 6:39 left in the half.
Outside shooting helped San Francisco neutralize first-half turnover problems and counteract Collette's baskets. The Dons shot 7-of-14 from the perimeter before halftime. It sparked at least one key spurt.
Remu Raitanen, Frankie Ferrari and Foster each buried outside baskets over three straight possessions to fuel a 9-0 run. They put the Dons ahead 38-31 with 1:26 remaining before halftime.
San Francisco kept pressing down on the gas pedal from the perimeter early in the second half. Boyce drilled back-to-back 3-pointers and converted a traditional 3-point play to highlight a string of five straight baskets that gave the Dons a 65-51 lead with 12:28 left.
Utah made a push midway through the half to get back in the game. The Utes ripped off an 11-0 run, culminating in a layup from Bonam, to cut San Francisco's lead to 68-64 with 8:26 remaining.
Utah then trimmed the deficit to 84-82 with 1:30 left on back-to-back 3-pointers from Barefield. But the Dons did not let the Utes get closer than a basket the rest of the way.
Leading scorer Kyle Kuzma only played one minute for Utah before leaving the game with an ankle injury. Kuzma is questionable for the remainder of the tournament.
