Creighton is off to its best start in the program's history at 13-0 following an 89-75 win over visiting Seton Hall on Wednesday, but the 10th-ranked Bluejays are not satisfied yet with their team goals this week.

Top-ranked Villanova, also 13-0, plays at Creighton on Saturday. It will be the first time a defending champion will play the Bluejays in Omaha and only the second time a top-ranked team will make a trip there. No. 1-ranked DePaul played at Creighton in 1980.

"Playing a game like that (against Villanova on Saturday) validates a lot of the resources put in our program by our administration and donors," said Creighton coach Greg McDermott, whose program moved to the Big East from the Missouri Valley Conference in 2013-14.

"Competing in the Big East and playing a national power like Villanova comes at a high cost. We've stepped up and paid that cost to compete in recruiting and become a top 10 program."

Five Creighton players scored at least 13 points in the win over Seton Hall, topped by guard Maurice Watson Jr.'s 21, in the Big East opener for both teams.

The other top four scorers for Creighton included center Justin Patton (17 points), guard Khyri Thomas (17), guard Marcus Foster (15) and forward Cole Huff (13). Watson also had 10 assists and five rebounds. Thomas contributed eight rebounds and three steals.

Creighton shot 56.6 percent from the field. Every one of its players who scored shot 50 percent or better.

"We can't let them shoot like that, and a lot of it has to do with Watson being such a tough guy to defend," Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said of the nation's active career leader in assists with 757. "It's fun to watch him play because he is a guy who gets things going. At the same time, he's patient getting the ball to the right players."

Seton Hall (10-3) was led by guard Khadeen Carrington's 27 points and a team-high three assists. Forward Desi Rodriguez scored 24 points while making five of six from 3-point range.

Post player Angel Delgado had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, but he only took eight shots from the field, making three. Seton Hall's 21-game winning streak when he achieved a double-double was snapped.

"When they were able to get the ball to him, we did a really good job of trapping," said Huff, one of three players who defended Delgado. "We concentrated on rotating to him and we did a good job."

Both teams had extensive stretches of outscoring the other, starting with Creighton going on a 21-8 run to build its biggest lead of 16 points (50-34) with 51 seconds left in the first half.

Huff had eight of his 11 first-half points in that stretch, and Watson contributed 10 points before halftime.

Seton Hall scored 11 unanswered points between the first and second halves to cut the lead to 50-45 with 17:36 left in regulation.

The Pirates cut the lead to 53-49 with 15:56 left in the second half on a 3-pointer by Rodriguez, who had seven points in the half at that point.

Two free throws and a layup by Thomas on consecutive possessions built Creighton's lead to 64-54 with 11:41 left in regulation.

Creighton took advantage of consecutive turnovers by Seton Hall with a jumper by Patton and a layup by Watson to build its lead to 75-60 with 7:01 left. The Pirates had 18 turnovers that led to 27 points by the Bluejays.

"You can't win on the road with 18 turnovers," Willard said. "Normally when you score 75 points on the road, you have a good shot. Maybe if we had only 12 turnovers things could have been different."

NOTES: Creighton's previous best start was 12-0 in the 2003-04 season. ... Entering the game, Creighton scored 89.8 points per game (ranking eighth nationally) while shooting 53.8 percent from the field (second). The Bluejays led the nation shooting 45.3 percent from 3-point range (first). ... Seton Hall played its first game without reserve F Myles Carter, who was dismissed from the team for undisclosed reasons on Dec. 22. ... Creighton G Maurice Watson Jr.'s 9.0 assists per game entering the game was the best in the country. ... Seton Hall fared well against the Creighton in Omaha entering Wednesday night, winning the previous two meetings at CenturyLink Center. The Pirates are one of only three Big East teams to win at Creighton since the Bluejays entered the conference in 2013. Villanova and Providence are the other teams.
