Hunter Cattoor nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer in regulation and hit a pair of clutch free throws with 4.4 seconds left in overtime to help No. 16 Virginia Tech rally for an 80-76 win at Miami in an Atlantic Coast Conference game on Saturday in Coral Gables, Fla.
Nahiem Alleyne's left-handed runner with 26 seconds left in the extra period broke a 76-76 tie. Cattoor, who finished with 14 points off the Hokies' bench, then took a charge with 6.6 seconds left and proceeded to seal the game at the foul line.
Virginia Tech (14-4, 8-3 ACC) avoided back-to-back defeats after their loss at Pittsburgh on Wednesday. The Hurricanes (7-11, 3-10), who were coming off a home win over Duke, couldn't nail down what would have been back-to-back ACC wins for the first time this season.
Miami's Isaiah Wong hit a three-pointer with 2.4 seconds left in regulation to give the Hurricanes a 74-71 lead.
But Cattoor answered when he nailed his shot at the buzzer to force overtime.
Leading 71-70, Elijah Olaniyi soared and blocked Justyn Mutts at the rim, crashing hard to the deck. But a foul was called and Mutts hit one of two to even the game with 11.9 seconds left in regulation.
Mutts led the Hokies with a game-high 22 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Keve Aluma had 16 points, six rebounds and five assists, and Joe Bamisile finished with 11 points. Alleyne totaled 10 points.
For Miami, Wong and Olaniyi each finished with a team-high 19 points, and Kameron McGusty chipped in 18 points. Nysier Brooks recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Wong has been the constant for the Hurricanes during an injury-riddled season as Miami once again went only seven players deep in their short-handed rotation.
Virginia Tech shared the ball well throughout the game, finishing with 25 assists, and shot 30-for-63 (47.6 percent) from the field.
