Jamie Newman passed for 312 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Scotty Washington, as Wake Forest rolled to a 41-21 win over Rice on Friday evening in Houston.

The victory allowed the Demon Deacons (2-0) to begin the season with wins in their first two games for the fourth straight year. Wake Forest beat Utah State at home 38-35 in its season opener on Aug. 30.

Rice (0-2) lost for the 11th time in 13 games under coach Mike Bloomgren. The Owls have defeated one FBS team in the past two years -- beating Old Dominion in the 2018 season finale. The Owls fell at Army 14-7 last week.

Freshman Kenneth Walker III ripped off a 96-yard TD run two minutes into the fourth quarter to put the bow on the win for the Demon Deacons. Walker led Wake Forest with 125 yards on nine carries.

Christian Beal-Smith got the Demon Deacons on the board on their first possession of the game, rushing 2 yards for a touchdown to cap a 10-play, 75-yard drive. Wake Forest added to the lead on its next drive as Newman hit Sage Surratt on a 7-yard scoring pass.

Rice starting quarterback Wiley Green was knocked out of the game during a run to the sideline and carted off the field with 4:44 to play in the first quarter. On the next play, the Owls' Aston Walter leaped over the pile at the goal line for a 1-yard TD run that cut the Wake Forest advantage to 14-7.

The Owls tied the game three minutes later as backup quarterback Tom Stewart (19 of 30 for 185 yards and a touchdown) rambled around right end and into the end zone for a 10-yard scoring run.

The second quarter belonged to the Demon Deacons. A 25-yard TD pass from Newman to Washington on the first snap of the period and a 26-yard field goal by Nick Sciba with 7:48 to play granted Wake Forest a 24-14 lead at intermission.

Sciba added a 23-yard field goal to cap Wake Forest's first drive of the third quarter to push the lead to 27-14. Later in the quarter, Newman and Washington combined on a 59-yard pass, catch, and run to make it 34-14.

Stewart passed to Austin Trammell for a 19-yard TD for Rice with 1:51 to cap the scoring.
