The New York Jets stuffed Fred Jackson on a fourth-and-inches play in the fourth quarter and shut down the high-powered Buffalo Bills' offense on the way to a 27-11 road win in an AFC East battle on Sunday.
Led by Jackson, the NFL’s second-leading rusher, Buffalo entered the game averaging over 30 points a game, but the Jets’ defense limited quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to 191 yards and the Bills (5-3) to a season low in points.
Meanwhile, New York (5-3) scored 17 points in under a seven-minute span in the second half to win its third straight game.
The Jets never trailed. They led 3-0 at the half getting a 49-yard field goal by Nick Folk late in the second quarter. New York ate up 10 minutes on one unproductive drive in the first quarter that ended when Mark Sanchez was picked off in the end zone by Jarius Bryd. It was Byrd’s fourth interception in four games against the Jets.
Folk, who missed a 50-yard attempt in the closing seconds of the first half, connected on a 50-yarder early in the third quarter to increase the lead to 6-0 before the Jets took flight.
Jackson’s first fumble of the year set up the game’s first touchdown, a 1-yard dive by LaDanian Tomlinson as the Jets led 13-0. After the Bills got on the board with a short Rian Lindell field goal, New York extended the lead to 20-3 on an 8-yard pass from Sanchez to Santonio Holmes.
John Conner added a 1-yard touchdown run for New York midway through the fourth quarter and the Bills finally scored a touchdown when Fitzpatrick connected with David Nelson on a 7-yard pass.
Jackson finished with 82 yards on 18 carries.
