Bruins 3, Rangers 1: Fourth-liner Gregory Campbell scored to snap a tie in the second period and added an empty-net tally in the third as host Boston won Game 5 to eliminate sixth-seeded New York and advance to the Eastern Conference final for the second time in three years.
Torey Krug became the first rookie defenseman in the post-expansion era to score four goals in his first five NHL playoff games, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Tuukka Rask turned aside 28 shots as the fourth-seeded Bruins will look to avenge a regular-season sweep at the hands of top-seeded Pittsburgh in the next round.
With the contest tied at 1-1, New York veteran defenseman Roman Hamrlik's attempt at a stretch pass was intercepted by Daniel Paille at center ice. Paille fed Shawn Thornton in the offensive zone before Campbell deposited a loose puck on the doorstep just inside the left post with 6:19 remaining in the second period.
Campbell secured the victory by backhanding the puck from along the right-wing boards into the empty net with 51 seconds remaining in the third.
After failing to score on its first 12 opportunities with the man advantage in the series, New York converted for the second time in three chances midway through the first period. Mats Zuccarello avoided Paille before dishing the puck to defenseman Dan Girardi, who unleashed a blast from the point that sailed past Rask. Krug answered 3:48 into the second as his one-timer from the edge of the right faceoff circle breezed over the left shoulder of Henrik Lundqvist (29 saves) for a power-play goal.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Penguins posted a 3-2 victory over the Bruins on March 12, a 2-1 triumph five days later and won a 3-2 decision on April 20 - one day after the scheduled contest was postponed as authorities conducted a manhunt for one of the suspects involved in the Boston Marathon bombings. ... Bruins D Dennis Seidenberg made his series debut after being plagued by a lower-body injury. Rookie D Dougie Hamilton sat out in place of Seidenberg, who registered two shots on goal in 23:37 of ice time. ... Krug, 22, is the second-youngest Boston D to have at least three power-play goals in a playoff season. Glen Wesley collected four at age 19 in 1988. Hall of Famer Bobby Orr also had three power-play goals in 1970 but was 23 days older than Krug. ... Rangers C Brad Richards, who was the 2004 Conn Smythe Trophy winner, was a healthy scratch for the second straight contest.
