Defenseman Brent Burns scored two goals and supplied an assist as the Carolina Hurricanes rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the host Washington Capitals 6-2 on Friday night, extending their winning streak to five games.
Seth Jarvis and Andrei Svechnikov scored the tying and go-ahead goals for Carolina, which trailed 2-1 entering the third period. Dmitry Orlov scored a short-handed empty-netter and Vasily Ponomarev, who made his NHL debut, had third-period points with an assist and a goal.
Sebastian Aho provided three assists and Svechnikov was credited with two assists. Pyotr Kochetkov made 15 saves for the Hurricanes, who completed a 3-0 road trip.
Nic Dowd and Dylan Strome scored for the Capitals, who scored twice on their six first-period shots. Darcy Kuemper stopped 28 shots, but Washington has yielded 12 goals in back-to-back home defeats this week.
The Hurricanes had five goals in the third period, while the Capitals had just seven shots in the final 20 minutes.
Burns has eight goals this season after giving the Hurricanes their first goal at 5:17 of the second period and their fourth goal with 6:01 remaining.
Svechnikov and Burns scored on power plays in a span of 1:18. That gave the Hurricanes 12 power-play goals in a six-game stretch.
Dowd opened the scoring at 7:06 of the first period with his fifth goal. Strome made it 2-0 at 16:29 with a power-play goal.
After Jarvis notched his 14th goal of the season at 3:23 of the third period, Svechnikov's ninth goal came with 7:19 to play with a blast from the right side, giving the Hurricanes their first lead of the night.
An assist on Jarvis' goal went to Ponomarev, a 21-year-old center who was added to the roster earlier in the day on a call-up from the American Hockey League, for his first NHL point. Then on a 2-on-1 breakaway, he posted the game's last goal just 50 seconds after Orlov's second goal of the season.
